At Westvale Park Primary Academy, we strive to deliver a Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum that embeds the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language study. Our chosen language of study is Spanish.
Our languages curriculum progressively develops children's skills in languages through weekly taught sessions in Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6). Children acquire, use, and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics.
Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As they build their confidence and skills, children record their work through pictures, captions, and sentences, which are displayed in class floor books. At the beginning of each lesson, children complete a retrieval activity, which will encourage them to draw on their prior learning, resulting in children knowing more and remembering more. During the lesson, the teacher supports learners and ensures that each piece of work is marked or acknowledged in line with the marking and feedback policy.
Children develop skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing to enable them to apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying the foundations for future learning and to develop their understanding of different cultures.
