Emotional Literacy
The most effective way to safeguard children is to teach them to recognise their feelings, voice their feelings, and who they can talk to when they are worried, sad or confused.
At Westvale Park, we begin this work in Nursery and Reception by introducing children to The Colour Monster. As pupils move into Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6), they are introduced to the Zones of Regulation, where they develop a deeper understanding of their emotions, learn strategies to self-regulate, and recognise when to seek support from an adult.
As your child goes through the school they will engage with key texts, celebrations, and assemblies to explore key themes such as: positive relationships, bullying, consent, worries, mental health, road safety, diversity. These themes are plotted alongside our computing curriculum and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) curriculum, which also cover the statutory guidance for keeping children safe.
At Westvale Park Primary Academy, the safety and wellbeing of our pupils is our highest priority. As part of our commitment to safeguarding and supporting children, we are proud to be part of Surrey Operation Encompass.
Operation Encompass is a national initiative, delivered in partnership with Surrey Police, which helps to ensure that schools are promptly informed about any incidents of domestic abuse that may have affected a child. This enables us to provide timely, appropriate support, helping every child to feel safe, nurtured and ready to learn.
Through Operation Encompass, a trained member of our safeguarding team receives a confidential notification from the police before the start of the next school day if a child has been present at or affected by an incident of domestic abuse. This early sharing of information means we can respond with sensitivity and care, providing emotional support and practical strategies where needed.
Our school has a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and deputy DSLs who are trained to liaise with the police and to handle information discreetly and professionally. Our approach is always child-centred, and we work closely with families wherever appropriate.
We believe that children thrive when they feel safe, respected and valued. Being part of Surrey Operation Encompass strengthens our ability to safeguard pupils and ensures that no child slips through the net when facing difficult circumstances at home.
If you would like to learn more about Operation Encompass, please visit www.operationencompass.org, or speak to a member of our safeguarding team.
At Westvale Park Primary Academy, there is absolutely no place for extremist views or ideologies of any kind. This applies to all members of our school community – including pupils, staff, governors, parents, visitors, and external agencies.
We are committed to safeguarding our pupils from radicalisation and extremism in all forms. Any prejudice, discriminatory behaviour or extremist opinions expressed within or beyond the school environment – including through language, actions or materials – will be actively challenged and addressed in line with our safeguarding policies.
As part of our responsibility under the Prevent Duty, we promote the fundamental British values of:
Democracy
The rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths, beliefs and backgrounds
We foster a culture where children learn to question and think critically, enabling them to recognise influence and make informed, balanced decisions. Partisan political views are not promoted in any part of the curriculum or wider school life. Where political issues arise, we ensure pupils are offered a fair and balanced presentation of different viewpoints.
We work closely with Surrey Safeguarding partners and local Prevent teams to keep our children safe and to support early intervention where concerns arise.
If you have any concerns about a child or an individual in relation to extremism, please speak to our Designated Safeguarding Lead or contact the Surrey Children’s Single Point of Access (C-SPA):
Online Safety
At Westvale Park, keeping children safe online is a vital part of our safeguarding responsibilities. The internet and digital technologies are an important part of learning and everyday life, but they also bring risks. As set out in Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), schools have a duty to protect children from online harm and to prepare them to use technology safely.
We do this by:
Our aim is to ensure that every child at Westvale Park develops the knowledge and confidence to enjoy the benefits of the digital world safely and responsibly.
When using any computer, tablet or phone device remember SMART:
S- SAFE
Never give out any personal details
M- MEET
Don’t arrange meetings with people online
A- ACCEPTING
Only open emails & texts from people you trust
R- RELIABLE
Online people aren’t always who they say they are. Only talk to friends and family that you already know.
T- TELL
Tell a parent or adult you trust if something you see online makes you feel uncomfortable (you could write a note in your class worry box).
To protect our pupils from inappropriate online content, we employ advanced filtering and monitoring solutions:
Internet Filtering: Our internet filtering system blocks access to websites and content categories deemed inappropriate for children, such as those related to violence, extremism, or adult material.
Monitoring Software: We use monitoring tools to oversee pupils' online activities within the school network, enabling us to identify and address potential issues promptly.
These systems are regularly updated and managed by trained staff to ensure their effectiveness.
